Albertina Kerr Receives $10,000 Grant from the Wheeler Foundation to Improve the Lives of People with Developmental Disabilities

Portland, Oregon  (August 1, 2012) – Local non-profit Albertina Kerr has recently received $10,000 in grant funding from the Wheeler Foundation for the purchase and installation of lift equipment at the Wheeler group home for adults with developmental disabilities.  The new lift equipment will help retain dignity, increase independence and reduce injuries for the five people living at the Wheeler group home as well as reduce the staff injury rate. The equipment includes one overhead lift, a mobile patient lift, and safety harnesses.

The Wheeler Foundation has long been a supporter of Albertina Kerr and was instrumental in providing the funding to renovate Kerr’s first group home, known as the Wheeler Group Home.  One of the first neighborhood based homes for people with developmental disabilities in Oregon, the first residents of the Wheeler Group Home previously lived at the Fairview Training Center, the state-run institution.  For many this was their first opportunity to experience a safe and nurturing home and to be a part of a community. Today, Albertina Kerr provides 24-hour support and individual growth opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities in 30 neighborhood group homes located in Clackamas, Lane, Marion, Multnomah and Washington counties. Private donations meet funding needs above basic care, allowing Kerr to provide the highest quality services possible.

Every day Albertina Kerr helps children, families and adults living with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges, empowering them to lead fuller, self-determined lives. A private non-profit organization founded in Portland in 1907, Kerr utilizes more than 91 cents of every dollar on programs and services for Oregonians.
