When Dean talks about his job, he shares: “Never underestimate the mindset of autistic people.”
Dean works at Lazy Days Brewing. Over the past two years, Dean has built friendships with his coworkers, grown in his role, and even helped brew a chocolate porter.
But Dean’s story isn’t as familiar as it should be. While nearly 77% of people without disabilities are employed in the community, only 16% of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) have that same opportunity. Dean hopes to change that—and he’s asking for your help.
Dean’s journey to meaningful employment began with Albertina Kerr’s Project SEARCH internship program. Through a 9-month placement with a healthcare provider, Dean explored diverse roles in the mailroom, sterile processing, and the cafeteria. “I learned there are so many job possibilities out there,” Dean shares. “Each rotation gave me new experiences and skills.”
Dean also participates in Kerr’s Inclusive Day Services: Path to Community program. Here, he practices job skills, volunteers, and builds connections with others. These experiences set the stage for his success at Lazy Days Brewing.
Today, Dean has taken on additional responsibilities at the brewery. His story is proof of what’s possible when people with I/DD have access to supports and opportunities. “I wish all my friends could find a job as great as mine,” Dean says.
You can help make that wish a reality. By supporting Albertina Kerr, you provide job coaching, skills training, and access to inclusive activities that empower people with I/DD to achieve their goals.
Dean is raising his pint to a brighter future. Will you join him? Together, we can change the statistics and ensure more people like Dean find meaningful employment.
